Happy Friday friends! I hope that you have had a lovely and wonderful week! It has been a beautiful and busy week- and one of my absolute favorite things has been my morning walks and runs along the lake. This picture from the other morning was just such a sweet reminder of the beautiful area that we live in upstate New York.

This week was...so so precious and yet... held some challenging moments. I am grateful for this sweet space to spend time with you each day and pray that whatever your week has looked like that you have a wonderful weekend full of rest and joy.

3. Moving In/Room Organization

So I almost feel like this should come with a disclaimer. *gentle smiles*

If you have been around this space for any length of time then you know that the last six years have seen my mom and I face a lot of intense and extreme grief. In May of 2019, 2 weeks after my mom had heart surgery and 5 days after receiving amazing blood work for me after fighting for my health and my life for nearly a decade my father unexpectedly and traumatically died. Less then a year later the pandemic hit and my work of being a travel blogger came to a sudden halt as the world shut down. 6 Months later in July 2020 my mom and I made a cross country move to Knoxville where I started my first teaching job (a dream come true) in 10 years. 2 months in my precious grandmother passed away. 6 months later we made another cross country move to upstate NY to Albany where we planned to settle only for it to become extremely clear that the school I was teaching at had HUGE issues and for my health I needed to follow what many other teachers chose to do and leave and we moved again- back to my grandmothers house. This was in November 2021. During this time it became extremely clear that my mom was going to need to have knee surgery that was going to be complicated for numerous reasons and we spent the next 10 months preparing for this and then she had surgery in October 2022. After staying almost a month in NYC as she began to recover we returned back home for her to start a very long recovery process. In 2023 my mom then needed to have heart surgery again. It was during this summer where we both were able to really take a breath, rest, and truly begin the process of unpacking and moving into my grandmothers home (now our home).

We have lots of items to go through and going through things while you are in grief is hard. We moved my mom from her home of 30 years that was 3 times the size into this home where my grandmother's items still were and combined that with some of my items from pre-sickness (that weren't lost in the mold). And it is just a lot. But we are at a point of being able to start this process of cleaning out, moving in and simplifying things. It is going to be a process but we are grateful for the time to do so.

So we have started in our middle room which we are turning into a work space/craft room and a room for our foster babies. Currently this space has become a "storage room/junk room" of a ton of just items we didn't know what to do with. So here is a before...

And here is where we are after working on this intensely over the last several weeks...

It is slowly coming along. This will be a process and any of you going through similar things... my heart is with you. We definitely appreciate all of the prayers.

Again, we live in a small home and so we are ALL about finding ways to clean out and be organized and when I saw these sheet organizers by another blogger being used I was immediately like- YES. 6. FLASHBACK FRIDAY

With Caravan Sonnet turning twelve years old this year I thought it would be fun on Fridays to share some older posts from the blog! One of the things that Caravan Sonnet developed into was a a resource for those looking into cruising around the United States and World.

One of my favorite trips we ever took was my collaboration with Viking Cruises along the Rhine River. We left the day after Christmas in 2017 and were on the cruise through the holiday season and welcomed in the new year in 2018 and y'all... it was absolutely amazing. a beginner's guide to getting more from every inch of your garden

Most people think they need a bigger yard to grow more. They don't. They just need to stop treating it like a static box. And start treating it like something that shifts through the season.

You will be surprised at just how much space is hiding there — corners you haven't used, gaps between plants, soil sitting empty because you weren't sure what to do with it.

Beginners miss this because they focus on just keeping things alive. Fair enough. But once the plants start behaving, you can push the space a little.

Not in a dramatic way, but just enough to get more out of what you've already got. Let's take a look at how.

Start With Plants that Actually Produce

Some plants are generous, some aren't. If you want more food without expanding your space, go for the overachievers — beans, greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, anything that keeps giving instead of producing one thing and calling it quits. You don't need a huge plan, just pick growers that don't waste your time.

And don't underestimate the seed choice. A lot of packets look pretty, then barely grow. You want seeds for bigger harvests, the ones bred to actually give you something.

Grow Upward

Spreading out fills up the soil fast. One squash plant and suddenly you've lost half a bed. That is why vertical growth is a lifesaver for beginners. Anything that climbs up beans, peas, cucumbers — frees up the ground for something else.

Use a trellis, a bit of netting, a frame, whatever you've already got in the shed. It doesn't need to match; it just needs to stand up literally.

When you move plants upwards, everything feels calmer. Less crowding, less mold, less fighting for space and light. And then in turn, harvesting becomes easier as you're not crawling through leaves on the floor trying to find that cucumber wedged behind a stem.

Drop In Fast Crops

One area beginners lose yield is by having empty soil. A patch gets harvested, then sits empty for weeks. You can fill those bare spots with quick crops — radishes, baby greens, herbs, scallions. These grow fast and don't mind fitting into awkward spaces.

The trick is to not overthink it: see a gap, put something in it that's that easy. You'll be shocked at just how much food you get from those tiny spaces you used to ignore.

Pair Compatible Plants

What this means is pairing plants that don't compete but work well in space. Some plants are divas and don't want to share space, but identifying those and ranging your mix properly means you can do more with what you have.

Top pairings can include tomatoes with basil, lettuce under peppers, beans going up a trellis with herbs underneath. Follow this rule: tall plants at the back, medium ones in the middle, and lower ones at the front. This way, everything gets what it needs — light, space, airflow, shade — all without stepping on each other.

Containers are Real Estate

Most people underestimate containers. They're not just an accessory — they're your backup plan. A place to stick a plant that doesn't fit anywhere else. A spot you can move around when the light changes throughout the season.

Put herbs near kitchen doors, keep peppers in containers so you can shift them to warmer places when needed, and drop a tomato into a pot and move it if it's not liking the shade so much.

Containers give you freedom, fixed beds don't. And when something fails — because something always will — a container lets you replace it without reworking the entire garden.

Feed The Soil

If you're not feeding the soil, you can expect things to fail sooner rather than later. This is due to soil exhaustion. You planted once, harvested once, and never added anything back. The soil can't restock itself.

You don't need anything complicated here. A scoop of compost between plantings, mulch around slower growers, and some organic matter at the start of the season. That's enough to keep everything moving. Once the soil has energy, so too do the plants.

Have A Late-Season Plan

When the summer fades, beginners pack up the garden like it's over. It isn't. There are plants that thrive when the temperature drops — radish, kale, spinach, and beets. They'll take a space you just cleared and turn it into food again.

You don't need a full strategy, just a few late-season seeds on hand to plant when a bed empties out. And it's really that easy. The season doesn't need to stop in August; you can coast along until winter shuts you down.

10 tips and tricks for long road trips during the holiday season

Happy friends! I hope that you are having a wonderful start to your week! Today I am excited to talk about some tips and tricks for long road trips specifically during the holiday season!

As some of y'all know, when I was growing up we would spend the school year in the south and then spend the summer months in upstate NY. Due to growing up like this and spending 2-3 times a year traveling 40 hours (round trip) I started to acquire some tips and tricks for these types of long road trips.

I feel like in the last 10 years of writing here on Caravan Sonnet about LOTS of road trips and adventures they have been put into practice in new ways with the recent Eastern Fall Road Trip we just took in the Fall (read HERE), our 2020 New England Winter Road Trip (read HERE) older adventures like the 9 day Alaskan Road Trip that we took in the summer of 2018 (you can read about it HERE) and the most popular read trip in New England/New Brunswick/Prince Edward Island/Nova Scotia Road Trip we took in 2017 (you can read about it HERE). There have been so many different beautiful smaller t road trips and I love a good road trip!

As I am in the midst of preparing and planning for several other exciting trips that I can't wait to share with y'all, we are also planning for the adventure of traveling somewhere over the holidays! 1. Save Gas Money Ahead of Time for the Fluctuating Holiday Prices
One thing that I started doing years ago is putting aside $5- $10 every week specifically for gas money for our trips. Now with todays gas prices this has increased. I typically for a trip that is going to be less than 5 hours away still save that money, but for trips that are longer (over 10 hours) I start putting aside $10-$20 a week. Especially during the holidays when gas prices can fluctuate and be even more expensive this can be extremely helpful. If you’re packing to go on quite the road trip, you have to remember that you need enough fuel to get you from place to place along the way. If you’re stopping at RV parks as you drive to see family for the holidays, it could help to calculate the distance between each spot so that you can figure out how much gas you’ll use.

Taking the time to do this can also easily eliminates stress about money for road trips when the time comes. Even if you don't save up all you need - you will be closer and it will help out! Another idea is to ask friends and family for Christmas for gas gift cards early that you can use on your trip. Thinking and planning ahead can help save a lot of money in the long run when you are traveling! *smiles*

2. Pack Water Bottles (or whatever you drink in the car)
As a gal who drinks a lot of water everyday, purchasing water bottles at gas stations gets to be expensive. Think about how you can save by picking up water bottles (or whatever your drink of choice is) ahead of time because most drinks are triple the price in gas stations then can be found on sale at Target, SAM's, or in a local grocery store. One thing that we did for a while when we were traveling back and forth from TN to NY was to purchase extra water bottles whenever they went on sale throughout the year. Another idea (if you are taking a road trip similar to one that I mentioned above) is to stop at a Walmart or Target as you begin your trip. We have done this on a lot of our road trips and it saved a lot of money.

3. Pack Snacks & Food if possible or Make these Stops "All-Inclusive"
If you like to eat snacks or food on your trip - try to pack them or make these stops "all inclusive" to keep the trip moving. As fun as the road trip is traveling during the holiday season will be hectic and crowded so making less stops will make it a happier experience. Pick places that not only has food, but has a gas station nearby and a place to walk around for a bit. Keeping things at one place instead of stopping for food and then stopping 20 minutes later for gas, and then stopping another 20 minutes later to use the restroom can really save a lot of time on your trip if you are trying to cut down on time.

4. Have "Reward" Places
Depending on where your trip is taking you, you might want to have "reward places". For the route that we traveled from TN to NY we literally crossed through the entire state of Virginia which took close to 8 hours. I love Virginia, and lived there for six years, but driving through it the way we had to was very tedious. One of the things that we started doing years ago (and should have done when we were kiddos my parents said!) is to have "reward stops". Whenever we now finish a section of the trip (we break it into thirds) we do something "fun". Sometimes it is as simple as grabbing a Starbucks or other times we have visited with friends or one time my parents took my sister and I to an old-fashioned amusement park for an hour, these "reward stops" are so fun! Honestly, these simple yet fun "reward stops" can create lasting memories not only for the trip, but for years to come. (My sister and I still talk about stopping at that amusement park more than 20 years later! Don't forget that the long car trip can be just as wonderful a place to create memories as the holiday destination itself!)

5. Have "Car Only" Holiday Traditions
My sister is going to die laughing when she reads that I have shared this story, but one of the most fun traditions that we had as kids growing up was our "night spy game". Yes, you are now rolling your eyes and are concerned but seriously y'all, this silly game kept us entertained for hours. I am giggling as I write this but what we would do is have a "special notebook" and we would (once it got dark because somehow this added to the fun *smiles*) write down as many license plate numbers as we could get before we grew tired of this game (which didn't happen for hours). Somehow writing this out is not conveying the fun that this seriously was. *hahaha* But y'all, we laughed and giggled as cars whizzed by us and we tried to write down as many as we could get down. It was a lot of fun and we still laugh about it to this day. And the "spy part" for those who are wondering? I really have no idea. *hahaha*

A couple of friends of mine who are parents to the most adorable kiddos have a couple of DVD's that I think their kids believe only exist inside of their car on long road trips. It is great because the kiddos only see these particular DVD's a few times of the year and they love them. What a fun idea!

Maybe during the holiday season for your holiday trip you have specific car only holiday traditions that you save for these trips. Be creative (it could be stopping at Santa's village in a different state, attending a holiday concert along the way, or even seeing lights in a specific neighborhood, etc.) and enjoy the fun adventure!

6. Understand and Empathize with the "mood" of your fellow Road Trippers Especially during the Holiday Season
Let's be honest, after 20+ hours in a small car together some people might want and desire a little space from each other. Even me who loves to have people close-close (my love language is physical touch/words of affirmation/quality time, and we love the close proximity to people that we love hahaha) can empathize that my sweet family/friends might not find me as funny or delightful after being with me for every waking moment for almost 20+ hours straight. (I know, I know it is shocking! *smiles*) Some people are going to be like me and thrive on this close proximity and others may just appreciate the quiet.

The holidays can be stressful and difficult and a long road trip for some people is going to just heighten emotions. Be sensitive to this and give a lot of grace so you remember the fun times more than anything!

So know your companions and empathize with the "mood". But honestly what is so sad to me is watching some families yell and snap at each other because they are tired and grumpy. Again, I can't stress this enough but remember that the road trip itself is an opportunity to spend time with the ones you love and cherish the memory opportunities. 7. Appreciate Delays

When I was growing up my childhood pastor said something that has always stuck with me as I have traveled; "Thank God for delays because they are often blessings in disguise." I can't tell you how many times we have been frustrated to run into a delay only to see immediately or down the road that we avoided an accident and I am sure that there are so many things we have no idea we have been protected from. Don't be frustrated with delays friends- you never know what you may have been protected from.

8. Break up the "Monotony"

This tip is especially useful if you are traveling alone but even with a family it can be practical. When I traveled back and forth from the lower south to Virginia Beach for graduate school it was a good 10 hour drive. Several years later as I moved to work and live in Washington DC it was a good 12 hours from my home. These long car trips by myself could have been very tiring but as I look back now I see them as sweet times to think, process, pray, and consider upcoming decisions.

In addition to this I found this a wonderful time to catch up with friends and family (on speaker phone for those who live in a state that is "hands free" *smiles*). One thing I did to help pass the time was to "break up" the monotony. For example for an hour I might chat on the phone and catch up with a dear friend and then the next hour spend time just thinking and praying and then the next hour listen to music and in another hour I would call another friend. After this I would sometimes listen to an hour of a book on tape or spend more time praying or listening to music. By constantly breaking the hours up in the car the time went by much more quickly.

It can also be really fun to pick up a book on audio that you & the person you are traveling with want to listen to and haven't read. Save it for a trip and listen to it together. It creates a fun memory and something to definitely chat about. Or grab a question book and ask each other questions. Or even better... just enjoy the company of that person.

This same concept can be great with kiddos also! A great idea that my mama had when we were younger was that she would collect "special and surprise" items for several months prior to a road trip and keep them in a secret bag. To us kiddos it was like she became Mary Poppins on the trip! I am not kidding y'all, she would pull out (slowly!) over the hours different surprises. They were all wonderful and nothing cost a lot of money but it was always fun to see what was coming out of mama's "Mary Poppins bag"! [hahaha! And when we headed out to California for treatment my sweet mama surprised me with a book to keep me entertained! So if you are thinking that this idea won't work with older kiddos you are wrong! I loved it! hahaha!]

9. Eye Covers are Your Friend

I mentioned this in a post about tips for sleeping better, but eye covers can truly be your friend in the car. I love me some eye covers. I tried a ton before I found one that I loved. I tried some that were extremely cheap and some that were more expensive before I found my favorite one. If you don't have one I would definitely recommend trying one. This can truly help you get some much needed rest on a long car trip! [This is my current favorite one HERE.]

10. Take Time to Enjoy the Moments and Places Along the Way.

Often times with a trip that is long you can start trying to figure out the quickest and easiest way to get to the destination. In doing so though we can sometimes miss out on some adventures along the way. Many years ago as I was driving from Georgia up to our cabin in upstate New York I decided to go an 3 hours out of the way to go over to the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. At the time the Memorial wasn't even completed but I felt burdened as a history teacher and an American that this was important to see.

As I stepped out of my car and walked around the fence there was only a few of us there and one of those that happened to be there was a family member of one of the heroes of 9/11. Having the opportunity to chat with them and hear their story was incredibly profound and humbling. It is a memory that I never forgot and it was the best use of an extra 3 hours of driving. I can't say enough how much I would encourage you to take the time to enjoy the moments and the places along your road trip!

Another favorite detour of mine was on the New England/New Brunswick/Prince Edward Island/Nova Scotia Road Trip I saw a lake in a distance and pulled off to explore it. It was so beautiful! Or on the Alaskan Road Trip we headed over to Hatcher Pass. Y'all if you have been reading the blog for a while than you know that I fell in love with this area and it's beauty (you can read about it HERE or see a video HERE). There are so many other examples I could share, and I can't wait to share some from our holiday trip, but take the time to enjoy the places and moments along the way- it will make your holiday trip that much richer and better!

Okay, so you know that feeling when you walk into your house and the air just feels wrong? It sounds weird, but just bear with this explanation for just a moment. Like it’s not warm, but it feels warm in that annoying sticky way. Which honesty, just feels kind of gross, right? Oh, and the windows look a little foggy for no reason. And your hair suddenly decides it wants to expand. In a weird way, it's like your house is breathing on you.

But yeah, you didn’t just shower, and it’s not even hot or humid outside. Well, chances are, it might have something to do with your plumbing, and as you know, you need to do what you can to take care of your plumbing, but there’s some other factors in this too.

Moisture Hides in Places that Make No Sense

Which is both the annoying part and the scary part, too. But yeah, it hides. It lurks. It does its own thing behind walls, under floors, around pipes, in crawl spaces that no one’s visited since the day they moved in. And the wild thing is that you don’t need a dramatic leak for humidity to rise. Like, sure, that makes complete and total sense to actually think that, but even a small drop (well, a tad more than that) can actually make a big difference.

But essentially, one little spot of condensation, one pipe that isn’t insulated properly, and yeah, it’ll spread through the air like it owns the place. Are there any crawl spaces in your home? Because those lack ventilation and they’re always damp, so that basically means all those tiny gaps, well, humidity will get through.

Bathrooms are Almost Always the Biggest Culprit

Just in the intro on here, plumbing was mentioned, and yes, that and your bathroom are entirely connected here. As you already know, showers are the ultimate humidity machines. You take one hot shower, and it’s basically like your entire upstairs feels like it needs a dehumidifier. And if the bathroom fan’s old, weak, or badly installed, it does absolutely nothing. But it’s not just that, it all still traces back to plumbing.

This surprises so many people because plumbing issues don’t always look dramatic at first, as in, no puddles or whatever, but again, it just takes a drip, or even a pipe behind a wall sweating, or a valve not even sealed. Yeah, those sorts of things. But Don’t Forget About the Kitchen

Oh yeah, don’t get started on kitchens. They’re just as guilty as the bathroom because of the boiling water, steaming food, running the dishwasher, all that water in the air just builds and sits there. If your kitchen windows fog up even a little, humidity’s already won.

Then there’s the HVAC

Sometimes the house feels humid because the air just isn’t moving. But why? Well, the filters get old, ducts get dusty, or the system’s not pulling moisture out the way it should. Happy Friday friends!! I hope that you have had a lovely and wonderful week! I am so grateful to spend time with each of you in this sweet space every single day.

Haha, y'all I am giggling a bit... if you know me in "real life" then you know that something happened this week that was a first for me in being an influencer/blogger over the last 12+ years...As background, I posted this reel on instagram (click HERE to watch):

And received tons and tons of hatemail DMs. Y'all. It was crazy. Over 12+ years and a simple post about November 1st and autumn still having stories to tell and I was getting messages of people even saying things that I hated baby Jesus if I didn't want to decorate on December 1st. What in the world?!? Hahaha I am still giggling about it. What made this even more crazy was the fact that it was ALL in DMs (no comments on the reel post itself) and second that this was my first real hate comments in all of these years. I am still giggling.

There are travel moments when history doesn’t feel like “long ago”—it feels present. On our Viking Rhone River Cruise excursion into Old Town Arles (click HERE to read) we stepped through sunlit arches and into the living story of the Arles Amphitheatre, a monument that has held the city’s heartbeat since 90 AD. Built as a testament to Roman engineering, it still crowns the center of Arles with quiet grandeur and enduring strength.

Walking up as we approached it was an absolutely beautiful setting!

Raised during the height of Roman influence in Gaul, the amphitheatre was designed for movement and spectacle: two tiers of arcades, 120 arches, horizontal passageways and staircases that guided the crowds with impressive efficiency.

Measuring approximately 136 m by 109 m, it seated about 21,000 spectators for chariot races, gladiatorial combats, and public celebrations—the social theater of an ancient world that loved order, drama, and the shared ritual of gathering.

As the Roman Empire receded in the 5th century, the amphitheatre’s purpose changed with the times. The people of Arles transformed it into a refuge and a fortress, adding four towers and building a small town within the arena itself—more than 200 houses and two chapels. For centuries, life unfolded inside these stones: homes clustered in the oval, a public square at the center, and chapels anchoring prayer to place. It is impossible to stand in the galleries and not feel both eras speaking at once.

In the late 1700s, a new chapter began. An expropriation process started in 1826 and was completed by 1830, clearing the houses from the arena and returning the monument to public life. That same year, the first modern event was held here—a bull race—signaling the return of the amphitheatre’s role as a place for the city to gather. In 1981, it was inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage ensemble, “Arles, Roman and Romanesque Monuments,” honoring its significance and preservation.

What I love most is that the amphitheatre remains vibrant—not a relic behind glass, but a venue that still hosts performances, concerts, and bull games across the seasons. Even when we were there for a tour- you could see students on a field trip learning about the History. You can feel the continuity: stone built for crowds still welcoming them, an ancient oval still holding light and story. We climbed, paused, and looked out over the city’s rooftops—thankful for places that gently stitch past and present together.

I definitely recommend a trip to the Arles Ampitheater- it is an amazing piece of History to see! If you want to go here are a few facts to help you before you go:

UNESCO: Listed since 1981 as part of “Arles, Roman and Romanesque Monuments.”

Today: The monument hosts cultural events (including bullfights, performances, and seasonal reenactments). Hours vary seasonally—check the official listing before your visit.

Disability Friendly?: Yes - there were opportunities for those in wheel chairs to be able to get into the Ampitheater and also be able to see inside. There were other places- for climbing stairs that are not possible to access.
